When we hear the word “Hell,” we think of a place that God or the devil created to torture sinners. But we humans create Hell! Even, and sometimes especially, religion creates Hell. When I was a child, I heard preachers describing in great detail the Hell that God had prepared for bad people. They contended that I might have been destined for Hell from the moment I was born or, perhaps, even before I was born. I got the impression of a God who would enjoy watching me squirm forever and ever in a lake of fire. It seems that many people no longer think of a place of eternal torment in a lake of fire, but most of us readily recognize the reality of “Hell on Earth.”
